Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born within Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt worked the evening shift in the role of a nurse so that she could follow her passion for theater and art during the day. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who had a strong social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Even though DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the famous civil rights protest across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by community of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to make a film that focused on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She then attended in the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded degrees in English and African American studies. While she was studying, DuVernay was interested in creating in the broadcast media. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the family home, and then looking through the rubbish of one jurors. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in a small production studio right following her college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
